Eligibility

While all teachers are invited to apply to Classroom Champions, our primary focus is on K-8 classroom teachers in publicly funded schools in the U.S. and Canada.

In the U.S

  • Classes in schools where at least 50% of students are eligible for a free or reduced price lunch

  • Located in rural or urban areas, or on reservation

  • U.S. Department of Defense Education Action (DoDEA) classes stateside and worldwide

In Canada

  • Classes with students from low socioeconomic backgrounds

  • Located in urban or rural/remote areas

  • Schools serving indigenous student populations, or located on reserve

  • If you teach indigenous students in the Calgary area, we have a special initiative for you

This year in Canada, we are launching Classroom Champions Circle! It is our unique Classroom Champions program, with the added goal of connecting Indigenous kids with mentors who share an Indigenous background. In addition, we have made some suggestions about how to adapt CC to connect with Indigenous teachings.

Classroom Champions Circle uses the same subjects as the core program and adapts them by connecting each regular subject to one of the Seven Sacred Teachings to indicate some similarity of purpose between the two. This may be useful for the students to relate the program to their cultural background and school environment. Mentors are also encouraged to use storytelling and incorporate other Indigenous Ways of Knowing in their lessons.
