Finish the School Year Strong with Classroom ChampionsAs the school year winds down, we know that students' energy is at an all-time high and their attention spans? Let’s not even go there. While this time of year may be a challenge, it’s the perfect opportunity to channel that buzzing enthusiasm into fun, memorable experiences that still build Classroom Champions skills.Whether you're looking for activities to fill those last few days of school, hoping to plan an end-of-year celebration, or want to send students off with a burst of joy and confidence, we've got you covered. Here are 10 active, low-cost, high-fun ideas your students will be talking about all summer.
1. Backyard Obstacle Course Challenge Inspired by popular shows like Wipeout and American Ninja Warrior, challenge students (or families!) to design their own obstacle courses using everyday items — jump ropes, hula hoops, cones, or lawn chairs. The creativity involved in building the course is just as valuable as completing it. All it takes is imagination and the will of a champion.
2. Cup Stacking Countdown Cup stacking, also known as Speed Stacks or Sport Stacks, is a surprisingly competitive skill that builds dexterity, concentration, and hand-eye coordination. Set up a classroom tournament in the final week of school and let students challenge each other (and you!) to beat their personal best times. Large plastic cups work just fine.
3. Jump Rope Jamboree Jumping rope is one of the oldest, simplest, and most joyful ways to get kids moving together. Can your class master double jumps, hot pepper, or the legendary Double Dutch? Throw in some classic rhymes and chants to make it a social celebration. It's a great way to mark the end of the year with movement, laughter, and community.
4. Fly Swatter Golf Test coordination and focus with an unconventional challenge… move golf balls using only fly swatters. 👀 Set up a maze of cups or a simple finish line and let students swat their way to glory. It's equal parts ridiculous and riveting which is exactly the kind of thing students will remember.
5. Stargazing Night (or Classroom Constellation Study) Not every end-of-year celebration needs to happen on the field. Wrap up your science year with a stargazing session or an in-class constellation deep-dive. The stories and myths behind the stars captivate kids of all ages, and connecting them to the wider universe is a powerful reminder that the sky is truly the limit. Resources like EarthSky.org are a great starting point!
6. Back-to-Back Beach Ball Race Pair students up, have them stand back-to-back, and sandwich a beach ball between them by locking elbows. Have the pairs race to a finish line without dropping it. If the beach ball falls? They have to start over! Think of this like a three-legged race that builds communication, trust, and teamwork in the most delightfully chaotic way possible.
7. Water Balloon Target Toss Set up a points-based target range using buckets, boxes, and cups of varying sizes at different distances. Students toss water balloons to earn points for their team. It's a fantastic outdoor end-of-year activity that rewards accuracy, strategy, and good sportsmanship — plus it's a guaranteed crowd-pleaser on a warm day.
8. Pantyhose Bowling This one never fails to get a classroom roaring with laughter. Drop a tennis ball or softball into the toe of a stocking and wear it on your head. Set up a "bowling lane" of full water bottles and knock them down with one swing of your head. It's absurd, it's hilarious, and it takes a surprising amount of focus and technique.
9. Squirt Gun Cup Races String a clothesline between two posts or trees and thread a plastic cup onto it. Using squirt guns, students propel their cups from one end of the line to the other as fast as they can. You could even set up multiple lanes for head-to-head races. This is a great lesson in cause and effect, not to mention a pretty good reason to go outside!
10. Frisbee Water Relay Challenge agility, balance, and speed by having students carry water from one bucket to another using only a shallow Frisbee. The first team to fill their goal bucket to a predetermined line wins! This one quietly teaches patience, steadiness, and perseverance — all traits our Athlete Mentors model for students every single day.
As you close out another incredible school year, we hope these activities bring your classroom community together for one final round of laughter, challenge, and connection. Our Classroom Champions Athlete Mentors remind us that growth doesn't stop when the whistle blows — it continues every time we show up, try hard, and cheer each other on.Here's to a summer of rest, adventure, big dreams, and to seeing you back in the fall, ready to champion another year.
