Both programs are designed to support what teachers do daily in the classroom. The SEL Foundations Curriculum offers a clear scope & sequence: eight units, each with four 30-minute lesson plans that could be implemented week by week. However, the lesson plans are designed in a way that they could be broken across days or expanded through the recommended extension activities. The lesson plans have suggested questions and responses, yet we encourage teachers to make adaptations or tailor the program as you all know your students the best! We provide much user support through online resources and monthly community communication. Mentorship+ connects classrooms with virtual athlete mentors by leveraging the power of video, therefore teachers can access and share athlete communication according to when works best for their schedules. In Mentorship+, our Educator Support Team is available at any time to help you with live implementation support!
With a SEL Foundations Curriculum membership, you have access to a teacher dashboard, which serves up the core and supplemental materials. Each of the curriculum’s eight units contains digital lesson plans that you can access from any device. The lesson plans are multimedia and contain downloadable student handouts and assessments. In addition to the media-rich lesson plans, there is a growing library of just-in-time videos, thematic Family Activities, and community outreach materials. And that’s not all -- the teacher dashboard has one-click access to support materials, our blog, our Facebook “Teachers Lounge” group, Flipgrid, and more. Mentorship+ is our premium offering as you receive all the SEL Foundations Curriculum materials, plus extras such as assembly kits, professional growth opportunities, an exclusive educator-athlete community, Classroom Champion t-shirts, as well as access to a dedicated virtual athlete mentor for your class or school. No. Classroom Champions is a non-profit and charity that connects volunteer Olympians, Paralympians, Student-Athletes, and Professional Athletes to K-8 classrooms through a social and emotional based curriculum and mentorship experience.
Classroom Champions has been developing student-mentor relationships for the past ten years. Back in 2009, Founder and CEO Steve Mesler was entering his final Olympic Games as part of the Team USA bobsledding team (where he won a gold medal). He and his sister, Leigh, decided to bring a handful of Olympic and Paralympic mentors into classrooms, launching the first stage of Classroom Champions. Since that first year featuring one mentor (Steve) and nine classrooms scattered across the United States and Canada, Classroom Champions’ reach has grown exponentially! In 2020, Classroom Champions launched their digital platform, giving access to the new K-8 SEL Foundations Curriculum and the Mentorship+ SEL Foundations Program to teachers and students across the continent.
